The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical:     Lawton Mainor Chiles, the 41st Governor of Florida, began his gubernatorial term in 1991 after defeating incumbent Governor Bob Martinez. Prior to his election as governor, Chiles served in the State House (1959-1966) and Senate (1966-1970), and served in the United States Senate (1970-1989). During his first term as Governor of Florida, Chiles' primary issues were the reformation of the state's health care system and recovery efforts from Hurricane Andrew in 1992. In his re-election bid in 1994, Chiles narrowly defeated Jeb Bush. During his second term, Chiles reformed education in Florida. Chiles died in December 1998, shortly before completing his second term as Governor, and Lieutenant Governor Buddy MacKay served the remaining 23 days.

Summary:     This series contains files of the Executive Office of the Governor relating to various state departments, programs, and issues. It includes reports of several governmental commissions, budgets, plans for the future of Florida, and records documenting legal issues, criminality, economic development, and domestic violence. The series also includes correspondence of Governor Chiles' Chief of Staff Linda Shelley.

    Box 10 contains correspondence relating to various issues between the Executive Office of the Governor and the General Counsel's Office (Thomas Crapps and Dexter Douglass) with the Capital Collateral Regional Counsel-North Region attorneys and investigators regarding the funding, functions, and operations of CCRC-North.
