The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical: ****DEACCESSIONED****Florida State University is located in Tallahassee, Florida. The institution was chartered in 1851 and has been state-assisted since 1857.  It operated under several different names until 1909, when it became Florida State College for Women.  In 1947, the name was changed to Florida State University and the institution was made coeducational.  It is part of the State University System which is part of the Division of Universities in the Dept. of Education.  The university president is appointed by the Board of Regents.

    Talbot "Sandy" D'Alemberte was born in 1933 and graduated with his juris doctor in 1962 from the University of Florida.  In 1966, he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives where he represented Dade County until 1972.  During the 1970s, he chaired the Florida Commission on Ethics and the Florida Constitution Revision Commission.  From 1982-1984, he was the president of the American Judicature Society.  He left that position to serve as the dean of the Florida State University College of Law.  In 1991, he became the president of the American Bar Association, and he held the position for one year.  The Florida Board of Regents appointed him FSU president, and he served as such from January 1994 to January 2003, when he was succeeded by T.K. Wetherell.  D'Alemberte then served as a lawyer in Tallahassee and professor of law at FSU.

Summary: ****DEACCESSIONED****The series contains subject files of Sandy D'Alemberte documenting his activities and areas of interest as President of Florida State University.  The series provides information about University programs, projects, and planning efforts, and includes materials such as budget reports; evaluations of various programs and colleges; brochures for the colleges; plans for the future of FSU; agreements with city government, state government, and non-profit organizations; information on national organizations to which FSU belongs; and campus maps.  Also included are D'Alemberte's personal notes on certain documents.
