Terms Governing Use:
Biographical/Historical:     The Department of Children and Families was created by Section 20.19, Florida Statutes.  The department's secretary is appointed by the Governor. The agency is responsible for the safety, well-being, and welfare of abused, neglected, and abandoned children, the elderly, people with disabilites, and those suffering from mental illness and/or substance abuse problems. It also maintains partnerships with local communities in assisting people to become economically self-sufficient, thereby creating stable families and communities. The department has the overall responsibility of all family services offered by the state.
South Florida State Hospital is a state psychiatric facility located in Pembroke Pines, Florida.  In 1998, the Department of Children and Families privatized the management of South Florida State Hospital, which thus became the nation's first fully privatized comprehensive state psychiatric hospital.  Subsequent to the move of the privatized institution to its newly-constructed facilities in December 2000, administrative and clinical records of the hospital from its years under state management were relocated to the campus of the Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee.

Summary:     This series contains the hospital records of its child patients.  Included in the files are psychological evaluations, admission and discharge papers, photographs of the patients, court documents discussing the judge's decision to place a child in the hospital, and correspondence between the parents and the hospital staff.  The majority of the files pertain to children who were residents of the hospital.  However, there is a file documenting the treatment of children in the day treatment program.
