Biographical/Historical:     Russell West lived in St. Petersburg, Florida at the beginning of the twentieth century and owned a small business in the city during that time. His family, the West and Clinger families, came from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The West family arrived in Philadelphia on September 16, 1845. Several members of the West and Clinger families served in the United States Civil War, and male members of the West family gained their citizenship after their service in the Union Army. The Clinger family arrived in the United States prior to the American Revolution and its male members served in the Army of Northern Virginia.

Summary:     This collection contains two letters written by Russell West to members of his extended family related to his experiences in Florida, his genealogical research, family history, and his travels in New England, Washington, D.C., and Canada during the 1970s. The letters discuss family stories passed down from previous generations as well as West's personal experiences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and St. Petersburg, Florida during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which touch on early commercial development in St. Petersburg and popular pastimes, including tandem bike riding.
