Biographical/Historical:     Wes Singletary, born in Tampa, Florida, received a Ph.D. in History from Florida State University in Tallahassee. Singletary taught history at Florida State University and Tallahassee Community College before accepting the position of Executive Director for the Discovery of Florida Quincentennial Commission of the Florida Department of State. Singletary is an author of books on baseball in Florida, including "Florida's First Big League Baseball Players" and biographies of Al Lopez and John Henry "Pop" Lloyd.

Summary:     This collection consists of materials compiled by Wes Singletary in researching and publishing his book "Florida's First Big League Baseball Players: A Narrative History." The collection includes handwritten notes, correspondence, typewritten transcripts and audio cassette recordings of oral interviews, photographs, and a typewritten draft of the book. The materials in this collection document the experiences of several first Big League players in Florida including Al Lopez, Russell Scarritt, Manuel "Curly" Onis, Jimmy Bloodworth, Bitsy Mott, and others. Several of the featured athletes were from teams in the Tampa and Ybor City area.
