The Division of Historical Resources has four main program areas: historic preservation, archaeological research, the Museum of Florida History and folklife. The Division provides statewide services from its headquarters in Tallahassee and through strategically located regional offices in St. Augustine, Tampa, and Palm Beach County/Delray Beach, as well as the Historic Preservation Board in Pensacola. All five resource centers provide outreach into multicounty regions and serve to encourage historic preservation and foster a statewide heritage network. The bureaus of Historic Preservation and Archaeological Research both work to protect and document Florida's historic buildings and archaeological sites, including underwater sites. The Bureau of Historic Preservation administers a historical grants program and the Florida Main Street program, a downtown revitalization effort that emphasizes preservation and rehabilitation of traditional commercial areas of our smaller cities. The Bureau of Archaeological Research maintains a computerized inventory of archaeological and historical sites, conserves artifacts and historical objects in its Research and Conservation Laboratory, and curates archaeological collections.
The Bureau of Historical Museums manages four Tallahassee historical sites that draw more than 200,000 visitors each year: the Museum of Florida History, the Old Capitol, the Union Bank and the San Luis Archaeological and Historic Site. The bureau also conducts a museum grants program.
The Division's Florida Folklife program coordinates Rural Folklife Days in mid-November and the famous Florida Folk Festival every Memorial Day weekend. It serves Floridians through Folk Heritage Awards, Folklife-in-Education, Folklife Apprenticeships, a calendar of special events and a variety of other activities.

This series contains administrative directives, correspondence and memoranda, land management plans, legal files, liaison files, operational and strategic plans, and other records documenting the administration and management of the Division of Historical Resources by Division Director Dr. Janet Snyder Matthews. Much of the material focuses on the five major Historic Preservation Boards which were in operation during this time period: the Florida Keys, Pensacola, Saint Augustine, Tallahassee, and Tampa/Hillsborough County and their activities in conjunction with the Office of the Governor under Governor's Chiles, Makay and Bush; the Department of State and Secretary of State's Harris and Hood; the Florida Folklife Council/Program; the Department of the Interior; the Department of Commerce; the Division of Historical Resources and local preservationist, Beth LaCivita; as well as Florida's Citizen and Direct Support Organizations. This series also includes architectural records of historic buildings, homes and districts, such as El Centro Espanol in Tampa, the Oldest House in Saint Augustine, Historic Pensacola and Historic Saint Augustine; proposed legislation relating to historic preservation; operational budgets; audit-financial records; land surveys; leases; legal instruments such as contracts, deeds, mortgages and wills; questionnaires; reports; property tax records and assessments; property inventories at historic sites such as the Brokaw-McDougall House and the Knott Family Home in Tallahassee and the Ringling properties in Sarasota; state trademarks; and various other documents regarding the acquisition and management of historic sites throughout the state of Florida.
