Biographical/Historical:     Lawton M. Chiles, Jr., served as Florida's 41st governor from January 8, 1991 until his death on  December 12, 1998. Throughout his political career, Chiles promoted the health, safety, education and families of the state's children. This dedication to children and families led to some of his greatest accomplishments as governor. Under his leadership, the state scored a landmark victory against the tobacco industry; set up a pilot program to reduce the use of tobacco products by minors;  implemented the Florida Kidcare Act, passed by the 1998 Legislature, which expanded the Healthy Kids program statewide and provided health care coverage to nearly 256,000 Florida children; bolstered prenatal and infant care services; enhanced child care services; and strengthened the state's efforts to preserve families and protect children from abuse and neglect. Chiles also  established public/private partnerships to boost economic development and tourism in Florida.
Summary:     This series contains Governor Chiles incoming and outgoing correspondence, letters, cards, political issues surveys, etc.  from the general public expressing their support, congratulations and criticisms regarding various issues. The correspondence also seeks the Governor's help, expresses public opinions, extends invitations or acknowledges special events or occasions.  Among the many issues documented by this series are the death penalty, refugees, child welfare, the tobacco industry, law enforcement, discrimination, Florida home insurance--availability and costs, health care costs, medical malpractice, Florida legislative proposals, capital punishment, casinos, hurricanes, Medicaid, environmental and agricultural policies, social services, automobile registration--auto impact fee, worker's compensation, educational legislation--voucher program, prison sentences, criminals, child health services, elections, animal rights protection, and cultural affairs/events. The Governor's office response is included in a few instances. The correspondence documents not only the major issues of Governor Chiles'  two terms in office, but also provides insight into how a large cross-section of the general public felt about these issues, and the role they felt the Florida government should play in them. Newspapers clippings and magazine articles were included with several of the letters.
