The Methodist Episcopal Church, South was the Methodist denomination resulting from a split over the issue of slavery that divided the churches of the North and South in 1844. During Reconstruction, northern Methodist churches sent missionaries to the South and the church began to flourish in Florida; there were then both North and South Methodist conferences in Florida. In 1939, the two regional denominations reunified as the Methodist Church.
Concord Methodist Episcopal Church of Hinson, Florida was approximately four miles north of Quincy in Gadsden County, Florida, on County Road 272. The church organized in 1875 in the Concord Charge, Tallahassee District, of the Florida Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Concord Methodist Episcopal Church, along with other churches in the Tallahassee District, met on a quarterly basis to report and record their church activities.
Summary:
This collection consists of registry books, minutes, and other records of Concord Methodist Church Episcopal Church, South, of Hinson, Florida. Included are two registry books: one contains registries for pastors, male members, female members, marriages, deaths, and births from 1876 to 1911; the other contains registries for pastors, members and infant baptisms from 1878 to 1947, with special notation regarding revisions made in 1911, 1921 and 1931. The minutes document quarterly conferences held in the Tallahassee District in 1906, 1907 and 1919. Other records include financial statements, insurance papers, mortgage and warranty deeds, newspaper articles, and miscellaneous correspondence. The collection also includes an extensive listing of pastors who served the church from 1876 to 1947.
