Biographical/Historical:     Development of the Chicago World's Fair of 1933 and 1934, titled "A Century of Progress," began on January 5, 1928. "A Century of Progress" was also the name of the corporation created to raise funds, plan, and conduct the fair. A joint resolution of Congress approved authorizing the U.S. President to invite the nations of the world to participate in the fair, and The Illinois Legislature permitted the Exposition to take place on 424 acres of state park land on the coast of Lake Michigan, opposite the city of Chicago. The mission of the fair was to celebrate a century of growth in science and the dependence of industry on scientific research.

The fair closed in November 1933 and reopened in 1934 with several changes and additions, including the Century of Progress Fountain, 670 feet long and the largest in the world at the time, as well as new piers, plaisances, and opera stages built over lagoons from bridges. Other additions included the Great New Automobile exhibit and the Foreign Villages. By the time the fair closed on Halloween night in 1934, almost 39 million visitors had attended.

Summary:     This collection contains a photographic album, presented to C. M. Collier (after whom Collier County, Florida is named) of the 1934 World's Fair and International Exposition in Chicago. Most of the photographs depict the exposition's Florida exhibit, but the album also includes images of other exhibits, including the Science Hall, Century of Progress Fountain and skyride, Chrysler's Great New Automobile, and the Foreign Villages. The photographs include images of historical events, places, and figures as well as plants and flowers native to Florida. The album documents historical events, ideas, and artifacts that exhibit personnel believed represented Florida industries, history, and culture.
