Biographical/Historical:     The Commission on Minimum Standards for Batterer's Intervention was established by Chapter 95-195, Laws of Florida.  It replaced the Commission on Minimum Standards for Batterers' Treatment that had been created by Chapters 94-134 and 94-135, Laws of Florida.
    The commission had a minimum membership of eleven and maximum of thirteen individuals.  These members were selected for their expertise in various fields, i.e. two members with expertise in the treatment of batterers, one from a state certified domestic violence center, one state attorney designee, one public defender designee, one certified addictions treatment professional, one county judge, one circuit judge, one military representative, one State University representative ffamiliarwith research in  the area, and one person from a state or county probation program.  Two more slots were available if the Governor chose to fill them.
    The Commission operated from July 1, 1995 until July 1, 1999. It monitored the implementation of standards, suggested amendments to standards, received information from the public, made recommendations to the Governor and Legislature regarding in-custody intervention strategies for batterers,suggested and initiated methods for evaluating program effectiveness statewide, suggested programs for other kinds of relationship and intra-familial violence, and carried out other tasks related to batterers' intervention programs.

Summary:     The Commission records include the subject files, correspondence, hearings (paper and audio tape) records, and other records pertinent to the carrying out of the Commission's multi-faceted tasks.  The Commission records also include files pertaining to the selection of the recipient of the "Governor's Peace at Home Award" for the years 1995 to 1999.  The Commission held these file even though this award was a program associated with the Governor's Task Force on Domestic Violence.
