Biographical/Historical:     In 2002, the Florida State Archives, Bureau of Archives and Records Management, initiated a project designed to elicit grade school students' perspectives on change in Florida cities, towns, communities, and landscapes.  In collaboration with the State Archives, art teacher Polly Werner conducted the pilot project with her third grade class at Dr. N. H. Jones Elementary School in Ocala, Florida.  The students researched old photographs of their communities using resources from the Florida Photographic Collection (http://www.floridamemory.com/PhotographicCollection/), local historical societies, or their own family photographs.  The students then revisited the locations or themes of those photographs and re-photographed them as they currently appeared.  The resulting pairs of then-and-now photographs were digitized and incorporated into the Online Classroom section of the State Archives' Florida Memory web site along with brief essays by the students describing the changes shown in the photographs (http://www.floridamemory.com/OnlineClassroom/then_now/).
Summary:     This series is comprised of the digitized reproductions of photographs collected by students participating in the Florida State Archives' View From the School project.  The images depict changes over time in Ocala people and places such as the students themselves as well as their parents, grandparents, and other relatives; offices, commercial buildings, churches, and landscapes; recreation; and wheeled machines such as automobiles, bicycles, and lawn mowers.  Many of the images are reproductions of images already in the Florida State Archives' Florida Photographic Collection.  The images, along with accompanying essays, teacher resources, and background information, are available on the web at http://fpc.dos.state.fl.us/memory/OnlineClassroom/then_now/  as part of the Online Classroom section of the Florida State Archives' Florida Memory web site.
