Biographical/Historical:     John Kunkel Small was renowned for his research on the flora of the southeastern United States and concentrated his efforts on the study of the flowers, bulbs, and herbs of Florida. His writings on botanical subjects included more than 450 books and papers.

Small traveled to Florida for the first time in 1901. He explored and photographed the forests of tropical hardwood trees and the interesting variety of tropical plants scattered throughout the state. Through the patronage of businessman and philanthropist Charles Deering, Small continued his Florida research for the next thirty-six years. His book, "From Eden to Sahara - Florida's Tragedy," received acclaim in 1929 for documenting the destruction of Florida's natural environment. Small died in 1938.

Charles Mosier was the caretaker for Royal Palm State Park, a privately-owned park on Paradise Key that was managed by the Florida Federation of Women's Clubs. Created in 1916 under the direction of May Mann Jennings, the park eventually became part of Everglades National Park. Mosier began as the park's caretaker in 1916. During his tenure at the park, he often worked with Dr. Small on his expeditions.

Summary:     This collection contains over 500 photographs taken by J.K. Small and Charles Mosier that document much of the flora and fauna of the Everglades, as most were taken during Dr. Small's many botanical expeditions. The images depict the many human activities in the Everglades, including Seminole villages, Royal Palm State Park, hunting and fishing, cane grinding, timber industries, and various residences. Most notable are the photographs of Indian mounds and various views of hammocks before early development destroyed them.

Aside from the Everglades photographs, there are also several from North Florida from 1924, including Mayport lighthouses, the Apalachicola and Suwannee rivers, the Crystal River, Turtle, and Green mounds, pine lands near Perry and Lamont, and farming in Quincy and Liberty County.

All the photographs have typed descriptions on the reverse sides, and most are dated. Many of the J.K. Small prints duplicate the prints found in Collection M83-2, J.K. Small Correspondence and Photographs. Several of the J.K. Small prints are numbered on the reverse; these numbers do not duplicate the numbering system used for Collection M83-2. Also, the numbered prints are incomplete.
