Biographical/Historical:     Fort George Island is located at the mouth of the St. Johns River in Jacksonville. In the early 1800s, John McQueen built his labor farm on the island's north end and later sold it to Zephaniah Kingsley. By the 1870s, John Rollins and his family owned the labor farm and the island. After several failed attempts at agricultural enterprises, the Rollins family turned the island into a recreational area. Today, Kingsley Plantation is part of the  Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve managed by the U.S. National Park Service, while the Florida Park Service owns the remainder of the island, known as Fort George Island Cultural State Park.

The Palmer family came to Florida from South Carolina, settling in Monticello (Jefferson County) in 1829. Martin Palmer brought his nine children, enslaved Black persons, and household goods, and became a labor farmer and the owner of a store and tavern. The family often enjoyed recreational activities on Fort George Island.

Summary:     This collection contains loose and scrapbooked photographs of the Palmer family at Fort George Island and nearby areas. The bulk of the collection consists of two small photographic scrapbooks of social outings, including boating with the 'ABC' fleet of the Florida Yacht Club and swimming at Fort George Island. The images include Fort George Island's Kingsley Plantation, then owned by the Rollins family; the ruins of the cabins of its enslaved Black laborers; glimpses of Little Talbot Island; Fernandina's harbor; a St. Mary's River cemetery; a Jacksonville neighborhood; Fort Marion; Fort Matanzas; and Seminole Chief Billie Bowlegs. The images of Fort George Island and Kingsley Plantation document the condition of the cultural and natural resources before they were state and national parks. Also included in the collection are two loose photographs: the Lewis boarding house, and a portrait of David Cook, a friend of the Palmer family.
