Biographical/Historical:     In 1838, the Florida Territorial Council formally established the post of Governor as one of the requirements for statehood, and it became effective in 1845. The governor serves a four-year term and, since 1968, can succeed himself one term.

The Governor is the Chief Executive Officer of the state and as such is commander-in-chief of the state militia, signs all commissions for state and county officers, fills hundreds of state and county offices by appointment, and has the power of suspension over state and county officers. The Governor is also chief planning and budgeting officer for the state, has veto power over legislative acts, can call special sessions of the Legislature, and can call for adjournment if the Legislature cannot agree upon a time.

Summary:     This collection contains various portraits of Florida governors from the 1850s through the 1970s. Allen Morris, founder of the Florida Photographic Collection, collected the photos. Included are portraits of Governors Albert Gilchrist, David Yulee, Dan McCarty, Reuben Askew, Cary Hardee, Doyle Carlton, William Bloxham, and William Marvin. Also included are photographs from Leroy Collins' daughter's wedding during his term, Governor Tom Brown's daughter Mary Sinclair Brown, Napoleon Broward sitting on his porch with his family, and several candid photographs of Governor Spessard Holland. Finally, there is one portrait of U.S. Senator Duncan Fletcher, and one group portrait of Governor Fred P. Cone with railroad magnate Edward Ball and other Floridians at the 1937 Great Lakes Exposition's Governor's Day in Ohio.
