Biographical/Historical:     Weeki Wachee Springs is a natural, freshwater spring located at the intersection of highways 19 and 50, forty minutes north of Tampa on Florida's west coast. Forty-five feet deep, the limestone spring emits 64 million gallons of water a day, forming the Weeki Wachee River that empties into the Gulf of Mexico. As with many of Florida's springs (e.g. Silver Springs, Wakulla Springs, and Rainbow Springs), local residents in the early twentieth century marketed Weeki Wachee as a tourist attraction, offering glass bottom and row boat tours. In 1946, former Wakulla Springs manager Newt Perry purchased the spring and surrounding area, hired several female swimmers to portray underwater mermaids, and opened the area as a full-fledged water park with daily tours and shows.

Summary:     This collection consists of two black and white photographs of Weeki Wachee Springs in 1933. Both images depict one of the early glass bottom boats over the spring, each from a different angle. Also visible in the photographs are the early, primitive tourist facilities, the springs' limestone formation, as well as the surrounding area. The photographs provide visual evidence of the nature of early Florida tourist attractions.
