Spanish explorer Don Pedro Menendez founded St. Augustine in 1565. As one of the oldest cities in the United States, St. Augustine played a major role in Florida's as well as the nation's colonial and early national eras. For years, St. Augustine shared duties with Pensacola as Florida's capital before Tallahassee was chosen in the 1820s. By 1902, due in part to that long history, the city had emerged as one of Florida's first tourist attractions, with such features as the Oldest House, Fort Marion (the Spanish-built Castillo de San Marcos), the old market, St. Augustine Alligator Farm, and its sea wall and beaches. Tourists often stayed at railroad magnate Henry Flagler's two posh hotels: The Ponce De Leon Hotel and the Alcazar.
Aside from tourists, St. Augustine's past also produced a diverse culture, including Spanish, African American, English, and Menorcan influences. This is evident in the city's architecture, its folkways, its cemeteries, and its people. That diversity attracted many artists and photographers to the area, especially during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Summary:
This series consists of a photographic scrapbook of Saint Augustine. Created in 1902, the scrapbook offers a visual tour of the city, with images of historic buildings such as the Oldest House, the Castillo, the Old Market, Huguenot Cometary, and several residences, as well as surrounding areas such as the lighthouse and Anastasia Island. Also depicted are scenes of the daily life of Saint Augustine, such as churches, schools, parades, the city docks, beach and marine recreation, coquina quarrying, and pedestrians. There are also nine loose photographs of Saint Augustine residences that may have come from the scrapbook, as well as a circa 1902 St. Augustine oversized postcard of the city's sea wall.
