Biographical/Historical:     Carlton Jonathan Corliss, railroad historian, was born in Crystal, Maine, on April 20, 1888. He attended school in Maine and entered railroad service in Boston in 1905. Corliss was Chief Clerk for the Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway from 1909 to 1914, after which he worked for the Illinois Central Railroad Company in Chicago from 1916 to 1936 and was the associate editor of the "Illinois Central Magazine." He was manager of the Public Section of the Public Relations Department of the Association of American Railroads in Washington, D.C., until his retirement in 1958. Corliss authored many railroad stories and a few books about the railroad industry. After moving to Tallahassee in 1967, he gave many lectures on railroad subjects, including slide shows for local public schools.

Summary:     The collection contains photographs of Carlton J. Corliss and his family, co-workers, and friends during the construction of the bridge extension to Key West, Florida. Photographs include the construction process of the bridge extension, the Florida East Coast Railway headquarters in Marathon, Florida, and workers relaxing on the beach near the construction site. In addition, this collection contains photographs of the second airplane flight to Miami and the first train to arrive in Key West over the Florida East Coast Railway bridge extension. Also included are various promotional photographs of Corliss for the Association of American Railroads.
