Biographical/Historical:     Dr. John Godfrey was the Chief Economist for Barnett Banks, Inc. from 1981 until mid-1995. He is currently a senior officer of Florida Economic Associates in Jacksonville, Florida. He is a nationally recognized authority on business conditions, financial markets, monetary policy, and regional economic conditions.

Dr. Godfrey began his career as a financial economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta in 1969 and by 1978 had advanced to Research Officer and Senior Financial Economist. He has also taught on the permanent and adjunct faculty of The University of Georgia, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Jacksonville University. He was actively involved in Barnett Bank's Asset/Liability Committee, the Pension Investment Committee, Corporate Loan Committee, and various task forces. He was also involved in the development of Barnett's strategic plans.

Summary:     This collection consists of the "Barnett Economic Week" newsletter and the "This Week" newsletter and other economic materials collected by Dr. John Godfrey. The "This Week" newsletter changed its name in May 1984 to "Barnett Economic Week." Staff of the Economic Research Department at Barnett Banks of Florida, Inc. prepared the newsletter weekly and each issue covered a variety of economic indicator topics such as consumer credit, car sales, durable goods, housing starts, money supply, retail sales, and factory orders. In addition to the written discussion, each issue generally contains various economic tables, charts, and graphs.

From the 1970s through the early 1980s, the newsletters include special reports: "This Month in Florida" and "This Month in the Nation." These appeared bi-weekly and presented in-depth articles on specific topics such as water resources, tourism, citrus industry, film industry, and growth of state and local government (Florida related reports); and U.S. Energy Policy, government regulation, inflation, interest rates, energy technology, and business migration to the Sun Belt (National reports).

In May of 1984, the name of the newsletter changed to "Barnett Economic Week." While the overall focus of the newsletter remained the same, each issue presented a given topic in greater detail and did not cover as many subtopics as the earlier newsletter did. While most of the articles remained focused on Florida, some of the issues covered topics in Georgia due to Barnett's expansion into that state. Of note are the reports discussing defense spending and military bases in Florida, the effects of Hurricane Andrew, recession and recovery, the citrus industry, and the tourist industry.
