Biographical/Historical:     The General Land Office (GLO) was an agency of the United States government created in 1812 to handle and dispose of public land, functions previously assigned to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Created as an independent agency, the GLO moved to the U.S. Department of the Interior after that department's creation in 1849. District Land Offices served as local outposts and sold public land at public auctions. If any land remained unsold after the auction, it was available for purchase on a first-come, first-serve basis. The President of the United States signed the patents giving people title to public land. The District Land Office for Alachua County purchases was in Gainesville.

Summary:     This single-item collection consists of a land deed for Nettie Miller of Alachua County for land purchased from the United States General Land Office at the Gainesville District Land Office, dated 10 April 1885.
