Biographical/Historical:     As part of the New Deal, the federal government required that states participating in relief programs organize a state planning board to prioritize and plan projects for the federal funds. Governor David Sholtz organized Florida's State Planning Board in 1935 with George Gross as its executive secretary. One of the New Deal programs active in Florida was the Work Projects Administration (WPA), which included various work-relief projects, such as the Florida Writers Project, the Florida Music Project, and the Florida Art Project. Eve Alsman Fuller was the state supervisor for the Florida Art Project, which opened galleries in every major city to put unemployed professional artists back to work.

Summary:     This series consists of a scrapbook that documents the Southern Conference of State Planning Boards held in Hollywood, Florida (from December 4-6, 1939), including the Florida State Planning Board's exhibit through a series of black and white photos and captions. The scrapbook also provides evidence of the State Planning Board, the various projects of the Florida Art Project, Florida Music Project, and the Florida Writers Project, as well as the many projects from surrounding southern states. Included are photographs of Governor Fred Cone, Senator Claude Pepper, Supervisor for the Florida Art Project Eve Alsman Fuller, and Florida WPA sculptress Joan Keller.
