Biographical/Historical:
Summary:     This collection consists of audio cassette tapes, video tapes, and news clippings documenting the debate in Florida over women's rights and the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s, and the political career of State Representative and women's and children's advocate Elaine Gordon. Audio tapes include state House and Senate ERA debates in 1973 and 1974; anti-ERA arguments of Phyllis Schlafly, conservative ERA opponent; and National Organization for Women conference discussions in 1971 and 1973. Video tapes include Rep. Elaine Gordon's 1984 election as the first woman Speaker Pro-Tempore of the House and her 1994 farewell ceremony in the House chamber following her announcement that she would not seek re-election. News clippings from 1971 report on women's political activism and the women's rights debate.
