The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical:         The Department of Labor and Employment Security was created in 1978 (Ch. 78-201, Laws).  It assumed the duties of the Dept. of Commerce's Division of Labor and Division of Employment Security which were transferred to the new Department.  It is the state counterpart to the U.S. Dept. of Labor.  It administers federally-funded activities; labor organization registration; and several programs, including unemployment compensation, employment services, apprenticeship, worker safety, and workers' compensation insurance.
    In 2000, the Agency for Workforce Innovation was formed by merging the Division of Workforce and Employment Opportunities and the Division of Unemployment Compensation (Ch. 2000-165, Laws).  Funding was stopped on activities and programs not transferred to new agencies and the Department of Labor ceased functioning on July 1, 2002.

Summary:     The series contains files documenting the organization and operations of the Department of Labor and Employment Security.  Among the files is a department profile prepared by the State Office of Information, miscellaneous information concerning Secretary Douglas Jamerson, a 1999 subject file maintained by Secretary Mary Hooks, and a notebook created by the Division of Workers' Compensation for new employee orientation.
