Biographical/Historical:     The Division of Animal Industry was created in 1959 (Ch. 59-54, Laws) as part of the Dept. of Agriculture.  The Division assumed the responsibilities of the Florida Livestock Board, originally created as the State Livestock Sanitary Board in 1917 (Ch. 7345, Laws). After 1969, the Division continued as part of the Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the successor agency to the Dept. of Agriculture.  The duties of the Division include protecting the Florida livestock industry through the control and eradication of brucellosis, tuberculosis, cholera, and other dangerous transmissible diseases of livestock; maintaining animal and poultry disease diagnostic laboratories; inspecting meat and poultry at slaughter; inspecting processing and packaging plants; and recording livestock marks and brands.  The Director of the Division also serves as State Veterinarian.
The Marks and Brands Division of the Department of Agriculture was created by the Florida Legislature in 1945.  John M. Scott served as the Chief Supervisor between 1945-1953 and was replaced by Alex G. Shaw.  The Division of Marks and Brands registered the Marks and Brands of cattle ranchers throughout the state.  Each county had a Marks and Brands inspector who recorded and registered cattle rancher's Marks and Brands.  The Marks and Brands Law of 1945 established the division in order to stop duplicate brands in the same counties and thereby, prevent cattle from being butchered and sold illegally.  Brands were applied to the cattle by either a hot iron, tatoo or an ear tag.
Summary:   This series contains administrative files of the Chief Supervisor, John Scott.  These records include speeches, reports, receipts, and procedures for county marks and brands inspectors.
