Biographical/Historical: The screw worm infestation began in Florida in the 1930s. The fly, which lives off blood and can spread disease among herd animals, came to Florida through the importation of "Dust Bowl cattle", cows from Oklahoma and Texas during the dust bowl era. For twenty years the Dept. of Agriculture and the State Livestock Sanitary Board fought the infestation through quarantines, inspections and other methods. The screw worm was finally eradicated through the introduction and breeding of sterile flies by the University of Florida.
Summary: This series contains three oversized scrapbooks of news clippings concerning the screw worm infestation, collected by the Dept. of Agriculture to track information on areas affected, damage wrought by the infestation, and methods of eradication.
