Biographical/Historical:     David A. Avant, Jr. was born in Tallahassee, Florida in 1919. He graduated from Leon High School and later received a Bachelor's degree from the University of Florida and a Master's degree in drama from Cornell University. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps (1941-1946) and in 1947 established L'Avant Photography Studios with his brother George Avant. David A. Avant, Jr. was a real estate developer and was active in Tallahassee community affairs. He served as president of several genealogical organizations and hereditary societies including the Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the Tallahassee Genealogical Society. He authored several books including a five-volume genealogical reference series titled, "Some Southern Colonial Families." He was also a charter member of the Springtime Tallahassee festival in which he portrayed Florida's first territorial governor Andrew Jackson in twelve annual parades.

Summary:     This collection consists primarily of genealogical records collected by David A. Avant, Jr. for his research into the history of numerous family lines. The records consist of family name files, correspondence, newspaper articles, genealogical newsletters, copies of historical records, and other related items.
