Biographical/Historical:     Marjorie R. Turnbull (b. 1940) served in the Florida House of Representatives as a Democrat from 1995-2001. Born on in Madison, Wisconsin, she married Gus Turnbull, who was provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Florida State University. Between 1979-1980, Marjorie Turnbull worked as a staff member for the Joint Legislative and Executive Commission on Postsecondary Education. She also served on the Leon County Commission. In 1995, she won election to the Florida House of Representatives from the Ninth District. During her term in the Florida House, she worked on various education-related committees, including the Education Budget Committee, and became director of the Tallahassee Community College Foundation.

Summary:     This collection consists of the personal papers of Marjorie Turnbull, including correspondence, memoranda, notes, meeting summaries and reports that represent Turnbull's service as a commission staff member for the Joint Legislative and Executive Commission on Postsecondary Education. These records reflect the long-standing debate over the organization of higher education in Florida; many of the proposals are virtually identical to higher education policies implemented in Florida between 2000-2001, including dissolution of the Board of Regents and establishment of individual Board of Trustees for the universities.
