The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Terms Governing Use:
Biographical/Historical: The post of Secretary of State was created in the 1838 Constitution (Article III, Section 14, 1838 Constitution; Article IV, Section 21, 1885 Constitution; Article IV, Section 4(b), 1968 Constitution; Ch. 15 FS).  The Secretary of State was the successor to the Secretary of the Territory.  The Office of Secretary of State was created in 1845 to maintain the state's public records. In 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws), the Office of Secretary of State became part of the Dept. of State.
Summary: This series contains letters, faxes, printed e-mail transmissions, and phone message logs related to the controversial 2000 Presidential Election.  The correspondence includes complaints from Florida voters, often expressing support or opposition to the Secretary of State and her decision not to extend the deadline for ballot certification, the process of hand counting contested ballots, or the request for a re-vote in the state of Florida.  Also, the correspondence voices concern about voter irregularities in the state, the butterfly ballot used by various counties in the state, and the military absentee ballots.
