Terms Governing Use:
Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Legislature created the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) with enactment of the Juvenile Justice Act of 1994 (Chapter 94-209, Laws of Florida). The newly created agency absorbed the powers, funding and personnel of the HRS Division of Youth Services, and also assumed responsibility for overseeing juvenile delinquency cases and children and families in need of services (CINS/FINS) cases. DJJ is headed by a Secretary appointed by the governor and who shares leadership duties with the Deputy Secretary.

Summary:     This series contains reports, correspondence, reading files, speeches and surveys that were created by, or sent to, the DJJ Secretary or Deputy Secretary since the department's inception. There is a mix of subjects addressed by the records, ranging from general administration to the administration of juvenile justice and its relationship to juvenile corrections. The records give some insight to the growing pains of the department. Some records are included from the department's predecessor agency, the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services, and address the same issues.
