Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Design Arts Awards is a program that brings together the professions of interior design, landscape architecture, architecture, engineering, urban design and graphic design to recognize collaborative design excellence in Florida. The goal of the award is to establish examples for innovation in the design and construction of public and private facilities.

The Florida Legislature established the Artist Hall of Fame Award in 1986 to honor persons, living or dead, who have made significant contributions to the arts in Florida, as either artists or benefactors (Chapter 86-169, Laws of Florida). Nominees must have been born in Florida or adopted Florida as their home state and base of operations, and must have made a significant contribution to the advancement of the arts in Florida.

The Florida Arts Recognition Awards began as the Governor's Awards for the Arts in 1973. The title changed in 1978 after George Firestone became Secretary of State in 1978. The purpose of the program is to recognize excellence in the arts or in the promotion of the arts in Florida. The awards are presented annually in four major categories -- individuals, businesses, government, and "other" -- to those demonstrating notable contributions to the arts in Florida during the preceding year. Awards are not necessarily issued in every category every year, and there is no set number of awards annually.

Summary:     This series consists of correspondence, supporting documents, nomination forms, and panel member scores for recipients and nominees (non-recipients) of the Design Arts Award, Hall of Fame Award, and Arts Recognition Award. Supporting documentation often includes published materials (magazines, pamphlets, and news articles), photographs, and audio recordings on cassette tapes or CDs.
