Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Arts Council is the current of a series of agencies concerned with the arts in Florida.  A Florida Arts Council was established in 1963 by a coalition of concerned citizens, cultural organizations, and the Florida Development Commission.  The Executive Board of this Council contracted to serve as the arts advisory committee to the Florida Development Commission.  House Concurrent Resolution Number 12 (1965) established that Florida Arts Council as the official arts consultant to the state.
In 1969 the Fine Arts Council was created.  It was placed in the Division of Cultural Affairs, Dept. of State, as the statutory agency that administered artistic functions for the state.  It replaced the Florida Arts Commission and the Florida Arts Council (Ch. 69-106, Laws).  The Fine Arts Council was reformed in 1980 (Ch. 80-319, Laws); its name was changed to the Florida Arts Council in 1981 (Ch. 81-127, Laws).  The Florida Arts Council is an agency that is reviewed for re-authorization every ten years and is authorized until 2000 (Ch. 90-267, Laws).
The Florida Arts Council advises the Secretary of State on methods to encourage participation in and appreciation of the visual and performing arts by persons in all parts of the state.  It also promotes Florida's cultural heritage resources.
Summary:     The series contains the meeting files of the original Florida Arts Council (1963-1966), the Florida Fine Arts Council (1970-1980), and the current Florida Arts Council since 1981.  Included are minutes, agenda, meeting packets, background materials for the meetings, and grant recommendations.  The series documents the activities of the Council as an advisory committee and arts consultant interested in promoting effective support of cultural and artistic activities within Florida.
