Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Legislature created the County Guards in 1917 to replace the National Guard of Florida, which had been activated for European service as part of the American Expeditionary Force of World War I (Chapter 7292, Laws of Florida). Not all of Florida's counties took part in the program, and each participating county was responsible for nominating officers and bore the costs of equipping the Guards. The County Guards were to be called to service in times of riot or disorder. The County Guards disbanded following the end of World War I, as prescribed by law. Some companies continued to serve their communities in an auxiliary capacity into the 1920s, while members of other companies joined the Florida National Guard once it was reorganized.

Summary:     The series contains records of commissions issued to officers of County Guard units in Florida during World War I. A bound volume contains the official commissions signed by the Governor and the Secretary of State. Each certificate provides the name of the officer being commissioned, the county in which he was to serve, his rank and the date of his commission. The volume is indexed alphabetically by county at the front. The loose certificates in this series are duplicates of the certificates found in the volume. Also included in the series are resignation letters submitted and notifications of appointments from 1917 to 1918. Although the County Guards disbanded four months after a peace treaty was concluded, a few commissions are dated in 1919 and 1920.
