Biographical/Historical:     The Board of Commissioners of State Institutions was created in 1868 (Article V, Section 20, 1868 Constitution) and consisted of the Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, Comptroller, Treasurer, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Commissioner of Agriculture (General Commissioner of Lands and Immigration prior to 1885) and, until 1885, the Adjutant General. The Board controlled state hospitals, correctional institutions, the construction of public buildings, the ownership of Seminole Indian reservation lands, the Governor's Mansion Commission, and the buildings in the Capitol Center Complex (except the Capitol). The Board maintained prison workshops and alcoholic rehabilitation centers; licensed airports; insured public buildings under its control; and held title to every patent, copyright or trademark owned by the state. The Board was abolished in 1969 with its functions passing to various departments of the reorganized Executive Department (Ch. 69-106, Laws).

Summary:     This series contains indexes to the minutes of the Board of Commissioners of State Institutions (Series 431). Three bound volumes cover Minute Books F - I (1919-1921) and contain the following indexes: Prison Matters, Florida Industrial School for Girls, Florida State Hospital, Florida Industrial School for Boys, Florida Farm Colony, and Miscellaneous Matters. The series also contains card indexes that cover Minute Books M - Z (1935-1958) and provide subject indexes to prisons, schools, hospitals, and miscellaneous matters handled by the Board.

    This series is incomplete. There are no indexes for Minute Books A - E (1869-1919) or Minute Books J - L (1928-1935).
