Biographical/Historical:     William Deubel was born on November 8, 1854, and emigrated from Bischheim, Germany to Danbury, Connecticut. In 1886, he bought ten acres of an orange grove at Keuka in northeast Florida to grow grapes. During his visit to Florida in 1887, Duebel wrote letters to his wife, Anna Hofmann Deubel. He traveled by steamship from New York to Savannah, Georgia, and from Savannah to Jacksonville, Florida.  Originally, Deubel planned to travel extensively through Florida but he was disappointed with his experiences in the state and with Florida's drastic weather changes during his stay. Therefore, Deubel's visit only lasted for five days. Deubel hired someone to manage his grape farm and returned to his home in Connecticut. After a freeze ruined his grove in 1894, he let his property go to cover the taxes owed on the land.

Summary:     The collection contains five letters that William Deubel wrote to his wife, Anna Hofmann Deubel, between January 16 and January 20, 1887. Deubel describes his travel and five-day stay in Florida while establishing his grape farm in Keuka. Deubel wrote about his travel on a steamship and his stay in Jacksonville. While staying at the Tremont House hotel in Jacksonville, Deubel met other businessmen and he briefly recounts their conversations about business prospects and weather in Florida.
