Biographical/Historical:     Charles Terrance Canady was born June 22, 1954 in Lakeland, Florida. He received his Bachelor's degree from Haverford College in 1976 and his Juris Doctor from Yale University in 1979. Canady was a member of the Florida House of Representatives from the 44th District from 1984 to 1990, during which time he served as a member of Marketable Record Title Act Study Commission and the Crime Prevention and Law Enforcement Study Committee, as well as majority whip. From 1992 to 2000, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida's 12th District. In Congress, he served on the Agriculture Committee and Judiciary Committee and chaired the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on the Constitution. In 2000, Canady left Congress and moved to Tallahassee, Florida, as general counsel for Governor Jeb Bush.

Summary:     This collection documents the service of Congressman Charles Canady as a member of the United States House of Representatives from Florida's 12th District. The collection contains legislative files, press releases, and Constitution Subcommittee records reflecting issues of interest or concern to Canady during his Congressional career.

    Legislative files consist of voting records of Canady's sponsored and cosponsored bills, and letters to colleagues regarding his sponsored bills. Bills and issues relating to Florida include an amendment to authorize $210 million in additional restoration funding for the Florida Everglades; funding a Lake Hollingsworth restoration project; his support for a Lakeland-to-Tampa commuter rail line that would reduce travel time between the two cities by 22 minutes; and his testimony about trade opportunities for Florida citrus in the Pacific Rim and the need to break down trade barriers in the region. News releases relate to lobbying, voting for, and passing legislative bills.
