Biographical/Historical:     Allen L. Lastinger, Jr. was born in 1942 in Atmore, Alabama. After graduating from the University of Florida in 1965 with a bachelor's degree in business administration, he worked for the Shell Oil Company as an area sales manager from 1965-1966. He then served in the U.S. Navy from 1966-1970 as an intelligence officer. After his naval service, Lastinger went back to the University of Florida and received his master's degree in business administration before a long and distinguished career with Barnett Banks beginning in 1971.

From 1972 to 1975, Lastinger focused on identifying potential acquisitions and sites for new banks. In 1975, he became the bank manager of a new Barnett Bank location in Gainesville, Florida, at a site that he had chosen. After his impressive performance in Gainesville, Lastinger advanced to executive vice president of community banking of the parent company and given day-to-day control of the system's lead bank in Jacksonville. In 1982, he became senior vice president in charge of all of Barnett's smaller banks.

In the 1980s Barnett Banks went through several reorganizations. Barnett adopted a "controlled autonomy" system of management in which the bank's activities were divided among four vice chairmen, one of whom was Lastinger. In 1988, Albert D. Ernest became president and Lastinger became chief banking officer. When Ernest retired on January 1, 1991, Lastinger became president and chief operating officer (COO). Along with Charles Rice, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Barnett Banks, Lastinger attempted to maintain Barnett Bank's independence as the last major independent Florida bank holding company.

In 1997 in a $15.5 billion-dollar deal, the largest in the history of banking industry at that time, NationsBank acquired Barnett Banks, Inc. and Lastinger became chairman and chief operating officer for NationsBank Corporation's Florida operations during the transitional period. On February 28, 1998, he retired from NationsBank after 27 years at Barnett Banks, seven of them as president and COO.
