Biographical/Historical:     On August 15, 1919, less than a year after the close of World War I, the St. Augustine National Bank opened its doors and offered banking service in St. Augustine, Florida. At the close of the Florida real estate boom in the late 1920s there were five banks in St. Augustine, but in 1929 four banks closed and only the St. Augustine National Bank survived the crisis. That same year, Barnett National Bank restructured its institution by selling a considerable share of the Barnett Family's stock and creating the Barnett National Securities Corporation, a corporation like a modern bank holding company. This allowed the bank to expand into other areas without breaking Florida's laws and regulations limiting bank expansion. Donald M. Barnett, son of Bion Barnett, was predominately responsible for Barnett Bank's growth outside of Jacksonville, Florida.

On April 1, 1930, the Barnett National Securities Corporation acquired the St. Augustine National Bank. On June 1, 1971, the St. Augustine National Bank changed its name to Barnett Bank of St. Augustine, N.A. On April 1, 1978, Barnett Bank of Anastasia Island and Barnett Bank of St. Augustine, N.A. merged to form Barnett Bank of St. Johns County. On December 31, 1984, Barnett Bank of St. Johns County consolidated to join Barnett Bank of Jacksonville, N.A. At the same time, Barnett Bank of St. Augustine opened and purchased assets of the former Barnett Bank of St. Johns County, except the Ponte Vedra office, from the Barnett Bank of Jacksonville, N.A. Barnett Bank of St. Augustine then changed its name to Barnett Bank of St. Johns County. On January 3, 1989, Barnett Bank of St. Johns County and Barnett Bank of Putnam County merged to form Barnett Bank of the St. Johns.

Summary:     The collection documents the organization, operations and activities of the St. Augustine National Bank, which later became Barnett Bank of the St. Johns. It consists of minute books from 1919 to 1938 containing articles of association, by-laws, minutes of director's meetings and annual meetings of the shareholders, and statements of condition. The collection also includes annual reports of statements of financial condition of the bank, policy statements for bank directors, photographs and negatives of employees and the new St. Augustine National Bank Building built in 1967, newspaper clippings on bank events and the new bank building, and advertisements on bank anniversaries from 1944 to 1989.
