Biographical/Historical:     Established in 1893, the Anti-Saloon League stood for the prohibition of selling, manufacturing, and consuming of alcoholic or intoxicating liquors except for medical, scientific, mechanical, and sacramental purposes. Because of their influence, the Anti-Saloon League became one of the leading prohibitionist organizations in the United States. Their primary support came from Protestant Evangelical churches and Justices having close relations with the organization.

By 1913, Florida's prohibitionists influenced state legislators to change the Article XIX "local option" amendment of the Florida Constitution, which gave jurisdiction over the prohibition of saloons to local authorities rather than declaring a statewide prohibition of saloons. In 1915, the Florida Anti-Saloon League lobbied state legislators to submit to voters a more restrictive prohibition amendment to Florida's state constitution. Consequently in 1918, the electorate adopted the Article XIX amendment outlawing intoxicating liquors throughout Florida.

Summary:     The single-item collection contains a 1915 petition from the Florida Anti-Saloon League to the Florida Legislature regarding the prohibition of liquor traffic in Florida. The petition contains information about the League's mission and legislative activities leading up to the fall election of 1916. The petition requests the 1915 Legislature to submit an amendment to Florida's Prohibition Article and invites the public to a meeting to hear former North Carolina Governor R.B. Glenn speak. In addition, the verso of the document contains a musical score entitled "Help Somebody To-Day" by Charles H. Gabriel.
