Biographical/Historical:     By 1927 Florida real estate market collapsed; many Florida banks failed due to defaulted loans and the plunging price of real estate. Consequently, to halt their losses, some banks in Florida reorganized. In 1929 Barnett National Bank restructured its institution by selling a considerable share of the Barnett Family's stock and creating the Barnett National Securities Corporation, a corporation like a modern bank holding company. This allowed the bank to expand into other areas without breaking Florida's laws and regulations limiting bank expansion. Donald M. Barnett, son of Bion Barnett, was predominately responsible for Barnett Bank's growth outside of Jacksonville, Florida.

In the summer of 1929, groups of businessmen from Cocoa, Florida, visited Barnett President William R. McQuaid and other senior officers to urge the Barnett National Bank to open a new bank in Cocoa. On January 8, 1930, Barnett First National Bank of Cocoa opened. It was one of the first three Barnett affiliates outside of Jacksonville, Florida. In 1971, the Bank changed its name to Barnett Bank of Cocoa, N.A., and again in 1977 to Barnett Bank of Brevard County, N.A.

Barnett Bank of Seminole County, N.A. opened on February 22, 1971 in Altamonte Springs, Florida. On November 1, 1981, Barnett Bank of Brevard County, N.A., Barnett Bank of Seminole County, N.A., and Barnett Bank of Orlando/Winter Park, N.A. merged to form Barnett Bank of Central Florida, N.A.

Summary:     The collection contains stock certificates issued by Barnett First National Bank of Cocoa, Barnett Bank of Orlando/Winter Park, N.A., and Barnett Bank of Seminole County, N.A. that detail the number of shares of Common Stock owned by shareholders. The collection also contains indemnity agreements between shareholders and the banks on converting shareholder's stocks from those banks into Barnett Bank of Central Florida, N.A.; new bank agreements of Barnett First National Bank of Cocoa and Barnett Bank of Cocoa, N.A. for directors to own and hold certain amount of shares of the capital stock of the bank for the purpose of qualifying as a director of these banks; and stock holder's ledgers that provide a list of shareholder's transactions among shareholders, Barnett Banks of Florida, Inc., and Barnett National Securities Corporation.
