Biographical/Historical:     In 1963, Guy W. Botts was President and CEO of the Barnett Banks in Jacksonville, Florida. At that time, Florida's banking laws prohibited branch banking and kept the state's banks relatively small. To be competitive, Botts developed a 10-year plan for expansion and concentrated on developing a network of Banks throughout Florida. His approach was to use the existing holding company, Barnett National Securities Corporation, to acquire or establish banks in each of the 20 most populous counties in Florida.

In 1965, Botts announced a plan for Barnett National Securities Corporation, which had been a subsidiary of the Jacksonville bank, to become the parent company by purchasing the stock of the Barnett First National Bank of Jacksonville. This gave Botts greater flexibility in using the holding company to purchase additional banks. On October 10, 1966, Barnett National Securities Corporation acquired First National Bank at Winter Park, founded in 1917. In November 1971, the First National Bank at Winter Park became Barnett First National Bank of Winter Park. This gave Barnett Banks a significant presence in the rapidly expanding Central Florida market.

The bank underwent several consolidations and name changes over the 1970s. First was a name change that all Barnett affiliates adopted as a common format: Barnett Bank of Winter Park, National Association (N.A.). In 1971, Barnett Bank of Orlando and Barnett Mall Bank, N.A. opened in Winter Park. On January 1, 1977, Barnett Bank of Orlando, Barnett Bank of South Orlando, Barnett Bank of West Orlando, and Barnett Mall Bank, N.A. merged with Barnett Bank of Winter Park, N.A. to form Barnett Bank of Orlando/Winter Park, N.A. A final consolidation of all Barnett Banks in Orange, Seminole, Osceola, and Brevard Counties resulted in a name change to Barnett Bank of Central Florida, N.A.

Summary:     The collection contains stock certificates issued by First National Bank at Winter Park, Barnett Bank of Orlando, Barnett Mall Bank, N.A., and Barnett Bank of South Orlando that document the number of shares of Common Stock owned by shareholders. The collection also contains indemnity agreements between shareholders and the banks on converting shareholders' stocks from those banks into Barnett Bank of Orlando/Winter Park, N.A.; new bank agreements of Barnett Bank of Orlando for directors to own and hold certain amount of shares of the capital stock of the bank for the purpose of qualifying as a director of the bank; and reimbursements for directors' meeting attendance fees in 1984.
