Biographical/Historical:     By 1927 Florida real estate market collapsed; many Florida banks failed due to defaulted loans and the plunging price of real estate. Consequently, to halt their losses, some banks in Florida reorganized. In 1929 Barnett National Bank restructured its institution by selling a considerable share of the Barnett Family's stock and creating the Barnett National Securities Corporation, a corporation like a modern bank holding company. This allowed the bank to expand into other areas without breaking Florida's laws and regulations limiting bank expansion. Donald M. Barnett, son of Bion Barnett, was predominately responsible for Barnett Bank's growth outside of Jacksonville, Florida.

In the summer of 1929, groups of businessmen from DeLand visited Barnett President William R. McQuaid and other senior officers to urge the Barnett National Bank to open a new bank in DeLand. On October 24, 1929, Barnett reopened the failed First National Bank of DeLand and renamed it Barnett National Bank of DeLand. It was the first Barnett affiliate outside of Jacksonville. In 1971, Barnett National Bank of DeLand became Barnett Bank of DeLand, National Association. In 1979 the Bank merged with Barnett Bank of Daytona Beach to form Barnett Bank of Volusia County.

Summary:     This collection contains minute books of the Barnett National Bank of Deland, Florida. The minutes document the topics of discussion, decisions made, and actions taken by the Bank regarding policies, budgets, rules and regulations, and recommendations and reports. Among the many topics of discussion are monthly income and expense reports; loans, advertising and donation budgets; profit and loss statements; interest account and building operations; and yearly, quarterly, and monthly statements.  The minute books contain by-laws and regulations of the Bank in 1929, directors' minutes of meetings, and annual shareholders minutes of meetings. The collection also includes photographs of the Bank in 1950s and 1960s.
