Biographical/Historical:     Following the big freeze in the winter of 1894-1895 that killed every orange tree in Marion County, Florida, the only two banks in Ocala failed. The First National Bank closed its doors on April 30, 1895, and two years later the Merchants National Bank closed. On January 17, 1897, T. T. Munroe and Z. C. Chambliss opened Munroe and Chambliss Banks in the building previously occupied by Merchants National. The new establishment provided a complete banking service for residents in Ocala. On July 7, 1914, the Munroe and Chambliss Bank became the Munroe and Chambliss National Bank, and later the Munroe and Chambliss National Bank of Ocala (MCNBO). In 1968, it opened a branch in East Ocala, the Munroe and Chambliss National Bank of East Ocala (MCNBEO).

In 1963, Guy W. Botts was President and CEO of Barnett Banks in Jacksonville, Florida. At that time, Florida's banking laws prohibited branch banking and kept the state's banks relatively small. To be competitive, Botts developed a 10-year plan for expansion and concentrated on developing a network of Banks throughout Florida. His approach was to use the existing holding company, Barnett National Securities Corporation, to acquire or establish banks in each of the 20 most populous counties in Florida.

Barnett National Securities Corporation acquired MCNBO and MCNBEO on April 1, 1969. The two banks assumed new names as Barnett Bank of Ocala, National Association, and Barnett Bank of East Ocala, National Association. In 1977, the two banks combined under Barnett Bank of Ocala, N.A. On June 1, 1982, it became Barnett Bank of Marion County, N.A.

Summary:     The collection consists of seven scrapbooks containing statements of conditions of banks in Marion County from 1915 to 1978. The financial data in each statement of conditions includes assets such as loans and discounts, overdrafts, bonds and securities, stocks, and furniture and fixtures; and liabilities such as capital stock paid in, surplus fund, circulation, deposits, and undivided profits. The collection also includes two scrapbooks of newspaper clippings from 1897 to 1915 on the operations of Munroe and Chambliss National Bank, and clippings from 1968 to 1978 and 1986 to 1989 on bank activities, advertisements, and quarterly reports.

The materials in the collection cover most banks in Marion County, including Munroe and Chambliss National Bank, Munroe and Chambliss National Bank of Ocala, Munroe and Chambliss National Bank of East Ocala, Ocala National Bank, the Commercial Bank and Trust Company of Ocala, Florida National Bank of Ocala, Barnett Bank of Ocala, N.A., Barnett Bank of East Ocala, N.A., First Marion Bank, and Sun Bank of Ocala.
