Biographical/Historical:     Sumter de Leon Lowry, Jr. (1893-1985) was a Florida businessman and insurance company executive. He was a long-time member of the Florida National Guard and served on the Mexican border in 1916, in Europe for the First World War, and in the Pacific for the Second World War. Along with Lieutenant General Albert H. Blanding, he was one of the national founders of the American Legion. Lowry rose to the rank of Lieutenant General upon retiring from the Armed Forces. He ran for governor of Florida in 1956 on a pro-segregation platform but lost the Democratic primary to incumbent LeRoy Collins.

Summary:     This collection contains an audio recording of Sumter de Leon Lowry's speech outlining his political platform during his campaign for governor of Florida. Lowry ran on a Democrat party ticket and supported racial segregation and the principle of states' rights.
