Biographical/Historical:     Richard (Dick) Stone, Florida's 16th Secretary of State, was born September 22, 1928 in New York City. His parents, Alfred and Lily, moved to Florida in November of that year. Stone attended elementary school in Dade County, and received his high school education at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, Georgia. In 1949 he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard University, and in 1954 graduated from Columbia University Law School.

Following admittance to the Florida Bar in 1955, Stone was a founder and partner of the law firm of Stone, Bittle, Langer, Blass and Corrigan in Miami. From 1957 through 1968 he also served on the Board of Directors and as general counsel for Royal Castle System, Inc. He was city attorney for the City of Miami from 1966 through 1967 when he resigned that position to run for, and won election to, a one-year term in the Florida Senate. He was re-elected to a four-year term in 1968. Stone resigned from his law firm and the State Senate in 1970 when he won election as Florida's Secretary of State. He resigned from that office in 1974 to run for the United States Senate, in which capacity he served until 1978.

Stone was a member of Alianza Interamericana; American Judicature Society; the American, New York State, New York County, Florida, and Dade County Bar Associations; and was also a member of the Moose, Elks, Knights of Pythias, and South Miami Rotary Club. Stone and his wife, Marlene Singer, had three children: Nancy, Amy, and Elliot.

Summary:     This collection documents Richard (Dick) Stone's service as Florida's Secretary of State and his 1974 campaign for the United States Senate, as compiled by James S. Hensley, a coordinator for the campaign. The first section, titled "Richard (Dick) Stone: The Man, The Times, and The Issues," is a compilation of news releases issued by Stone both as Florida's Secretary of State and as a senatorial candidate. Some topics of the news releases include campaign and election reforms, campaign for U.S. Senate, cancer research, education, energy crisis, environment and conservation, Federal tax laws (tax reform), and senior citizens.

The second section, "Richard (Dick) Stone, a candidate for the United States Senate in 1974," is a compilation of materials dealing exclusively with Stone's senatorial campaign. In addition to the narrative explaining the successes and failures of the run, it contains a transcript of his announcement of candidacy, a letter explaining his position on the appointment of Harmon Shields as director of the Department of Natural Resources, photographs (primarily black and white) and news clippings detailing the campaign stops, county by county election results, and campaign memorabilia.
