Biographical/Historical:     The Florida School Food Service Association (FSFSA) is a professional association of state and local school food service directors, supervisors, cafeteria managers, food service assistants, and nutrition educators throughout Florida. The Association promotes optimal health, nutrition, and education for all children, high standards for child nutrition programs, high standards and educational opportunities for child nutrition personnel, research and development in child nutrition programs, and national nutrition policy and legislation providing optimal nutrition and nutrition education for children.

The FSFSA is an affiliate of the American School Food Service Association, which traces its origins to the National School Lunch Act passed by Congress in 1946, prompting the merger of the Food Service Directors Conference and the National Cafeteria Association. Despite funding constraints, by the end of the 1950s nearly half of America's public schools had food service operations under the National School Lunch Program, and school food service personnel had established standards for sanitation, nutrition, and financial management for these operations. Their responsibilities expanded with the 1966 Child Nutrition Act, which provided some additional funding and established pilot school breakfast programs.

In 1966, the FSFSA absorbed the Florida School Lunch Association (FSLA), an organization of Black school food service personnel that formed at Bethune-Cookman College in 1950. The FSLA performed many of the same operations as the FSFSA, such as holding regular meetings to discuss school nutrition and devising training programs for personnel, as well as offering scholarships to needy students or lunch service staff for training and higher education opportunities and producing the "School Lunch News" bulletin. FSLA was affiliated with the American School Food Service Association and had representatives in the ASFSA's House of Delegates; many members had membership to both organizations, as well as the FSFSA. The vote to disband the Florida School Lunch Association took place during an executive board meeting on December 4, 1965, effective at the close of the next scheduled State Convention in April 1966, with all members encouraged to join FSFSA and ASFSA.

Summary:     This collection consists of administrative records and reference files documenting the organization, programs, and activities of the Florida School Food Service Association. The records include minutes and resolutions of the organization's governing bodies, the House of Delegates and the Executive Board; presidents' history files (documentation of each year's major programs and activities, compiled by the organization's president at the time); subject files relating to various administrative issues or program activities; county association files documenting the child nutrition activities of county affiliates and local schools; presidents' books containing correspondence, photographs, clippings, and other items documenting the activities and accomplishments of the organization during the administration of individual FSFSA presidents; Plans of Action outlining each year's priorities and objectives; photographs; newsletters and quarterly journals; and scrapbooks of clippings, programs, photographs, and other items. The collection also includes some records of the Florida School Lunch Association, such as conference schedules and meeting minutes.
