On February 2, 1916, Marjory Stoneman Douglas organized the Miami Business and Professional Women's Club (BPW) as the "Business Women's League" with about 25 members. Douglas served as its first President and remained an Honorary Member until her death in 1998.
In June 1919, representatives of the Miami Business Women's League and clubs in Jacksonville, Pensacola, Gainesville, Tampa, West Palm Beach, and St. Augustine met in Jacksonville and formed the Florida Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs, electing delegates to a planned national meeting. At that meeting in St. Louis in July, delegates from various states organized the National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs. The Miami club joined the national organization and changed its name to the Miami Business and Professional Women's Club. Due to decreasing membership in the Miami BPW, the Coral Gables BPW, and the Coconut Grove club, on March 9, 1993, the three clubs voted to merge and continue operating as the Miami BPW.
Judge Mattie Belle Davis (1910-2004) served the Miami BPW organization in many capacities including president (1952-1954), treasurer, and newsletter editor, and as President of District 10 of the Florida Federation.
