Terms Governing Use:
Biographical/Historical:     Dr. Patricia Clements grew up in Miami, Florida, and earned her Ph.D. in education. In 1996 Governor Lawton Chiles appointed her to Florida's Commission on the Status of Women and she served as the Commission's Women's History Liaison. As the liaison, Dr. Clements was responsible for connecting prominent and/or socially active Floridian women with the State Archives of Florida and Museum of Florida History to solicit donations of historical materials to these sites. In 1997, Dr. Clements began a project to record interviews with these notable women to preserve some of their memories in their own voices.

Summary:     This collection consists of oral history interviews conducted by Dr. Patricia Clements with Florida women active in public life and/or community affairs, including community activist Alicia Baro; microbiologist and Catholic Church and community activist Leona Cooper; Seminole medicine woman Suzie Jim Billie (possibly the oldest living Seminole at the time of the interview at approximately 100 years of age); radio talk show host and community activist Audrey Finkelstein; athlete, equity activist, and lobbyist Barbara Palmer; Judge Rosemary Barkett; and Brigadier General Marianne Mathewson-Chapman, Persian Gulf War veteran and highest ranking woman in the Florida National Guard. The interviews discuss each woman's family background, education, careers, home life, and personal philosophies.

Collection N2002-6, Patricia Clements Florida First Ladies Collection Development and Exhibit Records, contains materials related to Dr. Clements' other project documenting notable Florida women. Series S1676, Office of Secretary of State, 1997 Outstanding Women Achievement Awards Presentation Videotape, contains video of the presentation of awards to, and remarks by, two of the women interviewed in this collection (Leona Cooper and Marianne Mathewson-Chapman).
Language Notes: Susie Jim Billie's responses to interview questions are in her native Mikasuki language.  Translation into English is provided by her granddaughter Jeannette Cypress and her friend Betty Mae Jumper.
