Biographical/Historical:     The Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) was a prohibitionist and philanthropic organization active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Founded in 1894, its members lobbied for the adoption of a Constitutional amendment outlawing the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages. Their efforts culminated in 1919 with the adoption of the Eighteenth Amendment that established the prohibition of alcohol in the United States.

Several WCTU chapters were active in Florida. The Jacksonville WCTU formed on January 31, 1878 and formally organized on February 7, 1878 "to promote the cause of total abstinence." At the January 18, 1883 meeting of the Jacksonville WCTU, members established the state-wide Woman's Christian Temperance Union of Florida. The first state WCTU convention was February 28-29, 1884. At the second convention in 1885, Jacksonville was made the headquarters for the state union. The headquarters has moved several times over the years at the convenience of the state president.

The Florida WCTU has engaged in many activities relating to abstinence and related issues throughout its history, including alcohol use prevention education, literature distribution, lobbying for legislation at the state and nation levels, and prison visitation and evangelism.
