Swann was a wealthy plantation owner, enslaver, and financier with many business interests in Tennessee and Florida, while Holtsinger was a lawyer and owned large tracts of timber land in Georgia and Florida. Holtsinger was more actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the firm while Swann provided the capital. The Swann & Holtsinger Company developed "Suburb Beautiful," the first large, residential subdivision along Hillsborough Bay. They also built Bayshore Boulevard, the first major road along the bay.
