Biographical/Historical:     Don Fuqua represented the 2nd District of Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1963 until his retirement from public service in 1987. Early in his congressional career, he was appointed to the House Science and Technology Committee and became its chairman in 1979. A Democrat, Fuqua represented the largest district east of the Mississippi River; it stretched from Bay County in the Panhandle to Clay County, on the outskirts of Jacksonville. Fuqua also served on the Government Operations Committee.

    Born in 1933 in Jacksonville, Fuqua received his degree in agriculture from the University of Florida in 1957. From 1955 to 1957, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He listed his occupation as dairying but he has spent most of his career in politics since his election in 1959 to the Florida House of Representatives, where he served until 1962. Upon leaving Congress in 1987, Fuqua became president of Aerospace Industries Association.

Summary:     This collection contains publicity photographs of U.S. Congressman Don Fuqua. Several of the photographs are of Fuqua and his wife, Nancy, taken at political social events. Other photographs are of Fuqua in his role as a member of the Committee on Science and Astronautics, later named the Committee on Science and Technology. These include photographs of astronauts Sally Ride and Dr. Linda Fisher, and the Challenger astronauts. Other photographs are of Fuqua at the McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company with the Subcommittee on Manned Space Flight, Committee on Science and Astronautics. Other figures in the photographs include Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill, astronaut Neil Armstrong, and Werner Von Braun.

    The collection also includes some magazine and newspaper articles that pertain to the career of Congressman Fuqua either in his role as congressman, as Chairman of the Committee on Science and Technology, his political campaigns, or his retirement from Congress to join the Aerospace Industries Association.
