Biographical/Historical:     The South Florida Railroad ran between Sanford and Tampa, Florida. The railroad incorporated in 1878 and began operations in 1880. In March 1892, at the insistence of Henry B. Plant, James E. Ingraham, president of the South Florida Railroad, led an expedition through the Everglades south of Lake Okeechobee to report on the possibility of expansion. Although Plant decided not to expand in that direction based on Ingram's findings, Plant acquired the South Florida Railroad in 1893 and it became part of the Plant System in Florida.

Summary:     This collection contains typed copies of a diary and narrative report made by James E. Ingraham concerning the events surrounding the 1892 expedition to survey the Florida Everglades from Fort Myers on the west coast to Miami on the east coast. The narrative report follows but expands upon the chronological arrangement of events as set out in the diary entries. The collection also contains a list of the expedition's crew, as well as the orders that set out the purpose of the expedition and how the work was to be done. In his report, Ingraham describes the conditions encountered by the crew, the various people the crew encounters in the swamp, and the lay of the land as well as the conditions that would support economic activity. He continues his evaluations to include the area around Biscayne Bay.
